Cairo

Up

We spent just a few hours in the Egyptian museum - a mandatory visit IMHO for anyone visiting Egypt.  Fantastic amount of wonderful objects.
The chair is from Tutankhamuns' tomb, as is the ivory treasure chest.
We visited several of the major mosques in Cairo, all over 1200 years old.  It is great for the children to see other religions and places of worship, and mosques are very open and friendly.
We also visited Khan al Kahlili, the primary bazaar in Cairo.  Typical bazaar hard selling and bargaining, and, on the day of our visit, one of the very rare rains in Cairo.
The first picture is the pyramid at Sakkara, the first ever built.  This is the famous "step pyramid" - built in steps before the method was perfected.  The second and third pictures are of the great pyramids at Giza - we went into the pyramid when the electricity had failed and the entire passage was pitch dark.  You must bend over strongly for most of the passage, and the air was stale and hot (all the previous visitors + no ventilation at all).. an adventure!  We at least had a small flashlight, but many others were caught completely in the dark...  Made me think of several old horror movies, yes?

The last picture is from our hotel room in Cairo, overlooking the great pyramids.
